In The Big Disconnect, Steiner-Adair strives to provide readers with the current reality of the 21st century when it comes to the access and use of technology. The reality is screens of all kinds are taking up a large part of life for everyone, even young babies and toddlers. Steiner-Adair feels this addiction and connection to technology is leaving a lasting impact on the disconnect families and children are experiencing. This disconnect exists because children and adults are spending more time staring at a screen rather than interacting with one another. In addition to the depletion of family connection, the amount of time spent staring at a screen affects the learning, social, emotional and brain development of children, and in some cases, children are prematurely exposed to content on the internet that they are unprepared to view or understand. In this text, Steiner-Adair aims to not only make sure the reader is aware of the current disconnect amongst families of today, but she also provides helpful suggestions to the reader who may want to prevent the disconnection and/or reconnect their family.
